Neurolinguistics is the science concerned with the neural mechanisms behind the understanding, production and abstract knowledge of language, whether spoken, written or signed. As an interdisciplinary enterprise, this area straddles the frontiers between neurology, linguistics, cognitive science, neurobiology, communication disorders, neuropsychology, and computer science.
Researchers are attracted to the area from a variety of backgrounds, bringing along a variety of experimental techniques as well as very different theoretical perspectives. With aphasiology, brain imaging, electrophysiology, and computer modeling, neurolinguistics seek to clarify how the brain processes linguistic information.
